If your surplus is good enough for you to eat, it's good enough to share with neighbors in need. Over 36 million Americans are hungry and rely on local food pantries to help sustain their families.
Now that the Grow It Eat It campaign has helped you Grow It, let's share the abundance and Give It!
Vegetable philanthropy sites:
- Maryland Community Services Locator (www.mdcsl.org). Click on the "food assistance programs" button, enter your zip code and select a distance to location from the drop down box. Once you find an organization, contact them directly and ask if they will accept perishable food, and about their drop off policy. Not all organizations are equipped to accept produce.
- DC Metropolitan Area Capital Area Food Bank's 'Grow a Row' (incl. Montgomery and Prince George's Counties) connects growers with one of ~700 charitable organizations in the DC metro area. When you sign up for the Grow A Row project, you are connected you with a Produce Partner, and agree to provide produce for the entire growing season.
- AmpleHarvest.org is a nationwide grass roots effort to diminish hunger in America by making it easy for backyard gardeners across the country to quickly find local food pantries eager to receive freshly picked crops for their clients. Visit ampleharvest.org to find a food pantry near you or to register a food pantry.
- Anne Arundel County
- Food Link Maryland will accept fresh produce every Friday morning at the Farmer's Market location on Riva Road at Harry S. Truman Parkway. For more information, contact Paula Gordon 410-897-3941. - Kent County
- Plant a Row for the Hungry, is a public service program of the Garden Writers Association and the GWA Foundation. Deliver donations to the Chestertown Food Pantry on Tuesday or Thursday mornings at 9:00 a.m. For more information, phone or e-mail Barbara Ellis (410-788-6107, bwe@fast.net.) - Montgomery County
- Manna Food Center is the only food bank in Montgomery County and the largest emergency food pantry for Montgomery County residents. They accept donations daily from 8-4, M-F and have an after hours donation box as well. They are located at 9311 Gaither Road, Gaithersburg, 20877 (2 blocks off of Shady Grove Rd.) - Growing Soul - is your produce too far gone to donate? Take it to Growing Soul's Community Compost Center at the Olney Farmers Market. For more information, contact Growing Soul 301-537-7422 or jessica.weiss@growingsoul.org.
Queen Anne's County
- Donations of good quality produce will be accepted at the extension office (505 Railroad Ave., Suite 4, Centreville) on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday's of the month from 8 am - 12 pm from June through September.
